Popovich: resting his men for tougher times

With 4 NBA title rings, there is no doubt that Gregg Popovich can’t be told what to do with his NBA team, so the veteran San Antonio Spurs head coach, runs the pro basketball team the way he wants, and I’m sure nobody at the Spurs organization is worried about that since he’s one of the best coaches in the NBA.

A head coach of the scale of Popovich makes decisions that might be considered strange, just like allowing a one-week break for Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, Michael Finley and Manu Ginobili to come back and face the current NBA Champions, the Celtics this coming Sunday, but at the end, it seems like what we don’t understand about those strange decisions is what makes coaches like Gregg Popovich outstanding.

Popovich knows that the Spurs have the team to conquer one more NBA championship, and the current run for the title at the NBA is a tough one, so to sit his main men for a week means that he knows what is coming a head and wants his best players to be refreshed to face the remaining of the 2008/2009 NBA championship.

One of the best qualities of Gregg Popovich that sets him apart from other NBA coaches is that he understands how to prepare his players starting from training camp all the way to the NBA playoffs (and five times to the NBA championship title in his career).

In 13 years with the San Antonio Spurs, Gregg Popovich has gotten to know his team pretty well, and that is why he tries to maintain a certain structure within the playing strategy that the team employs, he knows that the run for the NBA title is more like a marathon on which teams are heading the tables for a while, then slow down a bit and fuel engines again when it matters: the playoffs, and they are pretty close.
